Paulo Costa is President and Chief Executive Officer of Novartis Corporation. In this position, which he assumed in October 2005, he is responsible for the Novartis Group Companies in North America and the Novartis US Foundation.

Previously Mr. Costa was President and Chief Executive Officer of Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation, Novartis' largest pharmaceutical business, and was responsible for the entire General Medicine business in North and Latin America. Under his leadership the pharmaceutical business achieved double-digit growth annually and gained substantial market share.

Prior to joining Novartis in 1999, Mr. Costa served from 1993 to 1998 as President of Janssen Pharmaceutical, the pharmaceutical subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson, and in 1998 became Executive Vice President, Global Franchise Development, and a member of Johnson & Johnson's Group Operating Committee.

A graduate of the Sao Paulo School of Business Administration, Getulio Vargas Foundation in Brazil, Mr. Costa earned a master's degree in business administration from Harvard Business School.
